CA Fall Novice Tournament (Oct 30)

The California Fall Novice Tournament will take place online (Discord) on Saturday, October 30; we plan to use the SCOP Novice set for this event. All high schools from California are welcome to compete (middle school teams cannot compete– sorry!) We are using the same eligibility standards as last year (listed here).

Ineligible high school students are invited to help staff [note: we are not able to provide volunteer hours if working for a non-profit is a requirement].

Freddie O’Hara (of SoCal Quiz Bowl) will handle payment- via Venmo (@Frederic-OHara), PayPal (freddieoharaiii@gmail.com), or check. Let us know if you are planning to pay via check and we will send you the details.

Please send any eligibility questions to caquizbowl@gmail.com (same email address that we used last year)

Fall Calendar

Hello Players, Coaches, and Parents!

Welcome to the new school year! We hope everyone had a pleasant and healthy summer.

1) Based on the results of the team survey (here– if your school has not already submitted), most Bay Area schools prefer to wait until Spring to resume in-person events. Therefore, we plan to continue with online Bay Area events for the foreseeable future.

[Note: Sacramento-area schools generally prefer to return to in-person in the fall. Thus, it is possible that we will run an in-person Sac HS tournament on October 23- stay tuned for details.]

2) Like last Fall, we plan to run an (online) all-CA novice competition. We are thinking about either Oct 9 or Oct 30 for this event; please fill out this survey and let us know what your team thinks.

3) Expect an announcement regarding Cal Cup by the end of September.

4) Oct 16 and Nov 6 will be college tournaments so it is unlikely that we will run any high school tournaments on those dates.

West Coast Championship Tournament

The (first ever!) West Coast Championship Tournament for High School Teams is taking place on Saturday, March 27 on Discord. This competition uses STASH for Competitive and NAQT IS-201 for Standard. There is no Novice Division; Novice teams are discouraged from playing this event. We are not placing a field cap on either division for the time being. Middle School teams cannot compete at this event (sorry).

We are restricting entrance in the Competitive Division to those teams that have either qualified for HSNCT/NSC or are applying for a wild card position to those competitions. Teams that are denied a wildcard bid will be asked to play in Standard (we’ll be in touch with such teams). Please let us know if you are unsure which division is best for you so that we can assist you.

The entry fee is $75 per team with a $30 discount per staffer provided. We are accepting payment via Venmo, PayPal, or Check; please contact us for details.

Registration (for both divisions) takes place on the NAQT website here => https://www.naqt.com/registration/field … t_id=12256

Results from Cal Cup #4

Congratulations to Guilder A for winning the Competitive Division, to Gunn for winning the Standard Division, and to Challenger-Strawberry Park A for winning the Novice Division at Cal Cup #4! Thank you to all of the players, coaches, parents, and staff for making the ninth year of Cal Cup a success!

Stats/results are here. Novice-only results are also listed on the NAQT website here.

Update on Cal Cup #4 Novice Division

We have decided to use NAQT IS-194A for the Novice Division at Cal Cup #4 as we feel that the DART set would provide too much of a challenge for Novice teams. We will still use DART for Standard and Competitive.

Even though we are using an NAQT set for Novice we are not asking teams to register via NAQT website; teams are still asked to register via the Google form (if you have not already done so).

We will post the field on Monday, February 1; we will ask for rosters at that time. Schools are encouraged to register before that time so as to increase their chance of avoiding any waitlist.
