Sacramento Fall MS Tournament Results

Congratulations to Churchill A for winning the Varsity Division and to Churchill I for winning the JV Division at the Sac Fall MS Tournament! Thank you to all of our volunteers for your help, to Bellarmine for letting us borrow buzzers, and to Mr. Hansen/Churchill for hosting!

Stats/results can be found here

Churchill set a record for most number of teams (17) competing at a tournament using NAQT questions (previous record was 14).

A reminder that the questions used at the 9/28 MS tournament will be used at a competition in the Bay Area on 10/19; participants should not discuss the questions with other teams/schools.

The next middle school competitions will be announced very soon.

Thank you for patiently waiting for the final standings.

2019-2020 California Cup

Welcome to the eighth season of California Cup! Like last year, all four Cal Cup competitions will feature three divisions: Competitive, Standard, and Novice.

Teams that intend to play 3 or 4 of the Cal Cup tournaments are encouraged to purchase “the package” (play the tournaments for the price of 3). Only teams that purchase the package are eligible to receive the overall Cal Cup prizes that are awarded at the conclusion of Cal Cup #4. In addition, package teams receive priority in case of a waitlist. Teams can purchase the package at Cal Cup #1 or #2 (but not after).

California Cup #1 (“Cal Classic”) will take place on Saturday, November 9 at Bellarmine College Prep in San Jose. The field cap is currently set at 18 for Competitive, 18 for Standard, and 25 for Novice; field expansion will depend on the staff+buzzer situation. Teams may consist of no more than 6 members. Tuesday, November 5 is the last day to register; in addition, all teams must have a roster posted before Wednesday, November 6.

We are still working to confirm the dates/sites of the other Cal Cup tournaments; we will provide updates when they are ready. We ask that one representative from each school fill out this form regarding potential dates for the other Cal Cup tournaments.

All teams (including package teams) that plan to play Cal Cup #1 must register on the NAQT website here.

If you intend to purchase the package at Cal Cup #1 please indicate so on your A team’s registration page (state how many packages and for which divisions). For example: If Bellarmine intends to purchase 1 package for each division then Bellarmine should indicate on their A team register for Cal Cup #1 “Bellarmine would like to purchase 1 package for each division.”

Beginning at Cal Cup #2 we plan to implement a new system for placing teams into the field. We will provide information regarding this when registration opens for Cal Cup #2.

Complete Cal Cup details can be found here.

Sacramento Fall HS Tournament (Oct 12)

We plan to run the Sac HS Tournament on Sat, Oct 12 at Churchill Middle School in Carmichael. At this point, our opinion is that it is highly likely that the district will approve our request; if there is an issue then we will hear about it on Tuesday.

Registration is now open for Sacramento-area school and Reno-area schools. Bay Area schools can begin registering at 6PM on Sunday (not before).

We will be starting this tournament earlier than usual: Check-in will begin at 8:15AM and we will commence round 1 at 8:45AM. Thus, the competition should finish in the 4->4:30 range.

Schools that are new to quiz bowl + schools from the Reno-area will play this tournament for free.

This competition features separate JV and Varsity Division; teams that are new(er) to quiz bowl are encouraged to compete in the JV Division.

Register on the NAQT website here

Entry fee details are here

Thank you all for your patience during this process.

Update on Sacramento Fall HS Tournament

The current plan is that the Sacramento Fall HS Tournament will take place on Saturday, October 12. The hope was that the competition would take place at Vista Del Lago HS in Folsom but today I determined that that would not be feasible. Thus, I am still in the process of confirming a host school; I will provide an update next week. Thank you for your patience during this process.

Results from Bay Area Fall Novice Tournament

Congratulations to Guilder for winning the HS Division and to Challenger-Almaden for winning the MS Division at the Bay Area Fall Novice Tournament! Thank you to all of our volunteers for your help and to Ms. Yang/Saint Francis for hosting!

Stats/results are here.

Stay tuned for details regarding the Sac Fall HS Tournament and the Cal Cup Tournaments.

We were made aware of inappropriate behavior in one of the rooms in the 100s building (middle school division). A Saint Francis teacher indicated Monday morning that “When I walked in this morning, a ton of my equipment was broken and/or messed up, and the room was a mess.” In addition, students were seen climbing tables and jumping on walls. Conduct of this sort is not tolerated; participants and chaperones are reminded that when we run competitions we are guests at the school and must treat the classrooms and facilities with respect.

Bay Area Fall Novice Tournament (Sep 21)

The 2019 Bay Area Fall Novice Tournament will take place on Saturday, September 21 at Saint Francis High School in Mountain View. Teams from outside of the Bay Area are welcome to compete.

Like previous years, this tournament features a division for Novice high school teams and a separate division for (all) middle school teams; middle school students cannot compete in the high school division.

Teams can consist of no more than 6 members. The field cap is 36 for HS and 16 for MS. This tournament is not a qualifier for HSNCT but it is a qualifier for MSNCT.

Please note: we are using the same questions in both divisions. Thus, this competition will be challenging to middle school students who are new to quiz bowl (such students are encouraged to compete instead at the other designated middle school tournaments).

Players who have competed at the NAQT High School National Championship Tournament, the PACE National Scholastic Championship, or finished t-13 or better at any NAQT Middle School National Championship Tournament must receive permission to play in the high school division from Nicholas Karas (nicholas.karas@naqt.com).

Experienced high school players are strongly encouraged to help staff this event (a great opportunity to receive volunteer hours).

Entry fee/discount information can be found here.

Upcoming Fall MS Tournaments

Hello Parents, Teachers, and Coaches,

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year; we hope everyone has had an enjoyable summer break.

The Sacramento Fall Middle School Tournament will take place on Saturday, September 28 at Churchill Middle School in Carmichael. Entry fee information/details can be found here; registration takes place on the NAQT website here.

The Bay Area Fall Middle School Tournament will take place on Saturday, October 19 at Stratford School-Fremont Osgood in Fremont. Entry fee information/details can be found here; registration takes place on the NAQT website here. We have increased the base entry fee but have also increased the discount amounts.

Both of these competitions feature separate JV/Varsity divisions; participants who are new to quiz bowl are encouraged to compete in the JV division. The top 15% of teams at both events will qualify for the 2020 MSNCT (to be held near Chicago in May) but only teams that compete in the Varsity division are eligible to qualify.

Please note: these two events will use the same set (NAQT MS #31); schools can compete at either event but cannot compete at both. We ask that each team consist of no more than 6 members.

One must have an account on the NAQT website in order to register.

Stay tuned for details regarding the Cal Cup tournaments/other competitions.

Last Bay Area Tournament of the School Year

This event is taking place at Bellarmine College Prep in San Jose. Apologies for the delay in confirming the host.

The High School Division is using SCT DII; these questions are similar in difficulty to those at HS Nationals; Novice-level teams should not compete at this event.

Register for the HS division here; entry fees/discounts can be found here. The current field cap is 10 and we each school can enter at most 2 teams (until we recruit more staff).

MS field can be found here and entry fees/discounts can be found here. Please drop your team(s) from the field if they are no longer able to compete so that we can accommodate the waitlist teams.

For both divisions we ask that each team consist of no more than 6 members.

Be aware that the entry fees/discounts are different for the MS/HS divisions although we are offering a $30 discount per staffer provided.

Please write out any checks to Bellarmine College Preparatory.
